Description
Sixty miles off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar Island marks the beginning of Muslim dominance throughout northern Africa. At one time Zanzibar served as the capital of the Sultan of Oman, a key trading point in the Indian Ocean and the capital of the Arab slave trade in Africa.
Despite the island's reunification with the mainland in the mid-1960's, the island has remained extremely independent, holding tightly to its Muslim heritage. Over 98% of the island adheres to Islam, making Zanzibar and the several surrounding islands the most fundamentally strong Islamic center south of the equator. Despite this bleak outlook for the light of Jesus Christ, there is great hope on the horizon.
Zanzibar has political attachments to the religiously free mainland that make it one of the only Muslim dominated areas in the world where the Gospel is allowed to be preached. This makes Zanzibar the doorway to the Muslim world. But as Christ said, "The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few." Workers for the gospel of Jesus Christ are needed to begin to impact this island nation for the Kingdom of God. Team members will partner with a long time pioneer for the gospel, Pastor Suleiman Khalfon.
After his own dramatic conversion from Islam, Pastor Khalfon and his family have been working on Zanzibar for over 11 years. Taking persecution as his "daily bread," Pastor Khalfon longs for young men and women from all over the world to come and partner with him to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to a dark world. The "Jesus Film," door to door witnessing, crusades, and ministry to the local children are just a few of the techniques that have seen dramatic results throughout the island. But in a land of over one million people, more hands are needed now then ever for the gospel to become the rock that Zanzibar is built on.
It takes the dedicated few who are willing to give all to bring the Good News to those who have never heard it. Pastor Khalfon needs you, Zanzibar needs you, and the Muslim world needs you to come and make an impact. Those who heed the call will see the lives of others changed through the power of the cross and will in turn be forever changed themselves. |
