Walking on Water

The boat is safe. It’s comfortable. It’s familiar, “inside-the-box” and ordinary. But God has called us to the kind of life that is extraordinary, outside-the-box, stretching-the-comfort-zone. He has called us to get out of the boat. To walk on water.
For most of the time, we have enough. Many times we even have more than enough. But sometimes we find our wallets - and bank account - empty. It happened in January. We were to return to Zambia, but had only enough money to pay for fuel. What were we to do? Borrow money? Extend our overdraft? It just didn’t feel right. We decided to take a stand, to draw a line. We got out of the boat. “God, you have called us to Zambia. We trust that you will provide our needs. We cannot leave before you provide, and we know that You will. We’re not going to look to anyone or anything else but You.” We prayed this prayer the day before we had to leave. An hour later, someone gave us R1 000. Two hours later, someone else gave us R2 000. Our needs were met!
Then we got to Zambia. All our money was spent on getting here. It was nearing the end of the month and we had bills to pay. We were still walking on water – no way out, except to trust God. Arthur checked our bank account. Someone had paid in R8 000! We could pay our bills and buy our food. All along, God impressed on my heart, that this was just a “practice run”. Soon we would have to trust Him in a bigger way, walking on water with bigger waves.
The day came sooner than we knew it. We received notice. We would have to move. Again. We had no money to finish our house. Time to get out of the boat again! We trusted God that any extra money coming into our account, above and beyond our normal donations, would be His provision for our house. A day later R8 000 was paid into our account – exactly enough money to buy steel, brackets and gliders to make window frames. A few days later $500 came in. Enough to buy plumbing supplies…
Right now, Arthur is welding the window frames. When he gets done, he’ll start on the plumbing. We trust that when he’s done with that, we will have provision for plastering and tiling. Then we need to install kitchen cabinets, and we can just about move in! We’ll need to do more once we moved– painting, ceilings, burglar bars...
God loves it when we trust Him completely. He enjoys providing our needs, and blessing us with even a little more. He loves when we walk on water!
Will you take this watery walk with us? Will you get out of your boat and trust God for that one thing in your life? God WANTS to help you. He’s just waiting for you to get out of the boat.
